Flying on campus
Flights that occur on the Blacksburg campus (but outside the Virginia Tech Drone Park, which has separate protocols and generally less stringent requirements) are subject to the guidelines below. All flights in this category must be approved in advance.
The protocol includes the following requirements:
- Obtain specific written permission for each flight or mission: apply online.
- Part 107 FAA Remote Pilot Certificate or other applicable FAA authorization.
- Virginia Tech UAS training; available as a self-directed course through Canvas here.
- Aircraft must be registered with the university via the online flight application process linked above.
Commercial and third-party operations will have additional requirements.
Refer to this safe flight guide for recommended best practices for Virginia Tech drone users.
