University aircraft on non-university property

The protocol for flying university-owned aircraft outside university-controlled property doesn't require that the UAS Oversight Committee approve each operation; however, operators must follow all federal, state, and local laws.

The overlapping regulations can be confusing and sometimes contradictory; the UAS Safety Office can help you navigate those restrictions to ensure that your operation is permissible, successful, and safe.  

The basic requirements for Virginia Tech flight still apply: 

• Obtain a Part 107 FAA Remote Pilot Certificate or meet specific FAA flight authorization qualifications.
• Complete the Virginia Tech UAS training; available as a self-directed course through Canvas here.
• Register your aircraft with the UAS Safety Office, which will put it on file with the Office of Insurance and Risk Management.
