Drone Park Part 107 Grant

The Virginia Tech Drone Park is helping students become Federal Aviation Administration certified drone pilots by reimbursing the testing fee for undergraduates who complete the Part 107 exam with a passing grade.

What’s FAA Part 107?

If you have a small drone that is less than 55 pounds, you can fly for work or business by following the Part 107 guidelines.

To fly under Part 107 rules, there are three main steps:

  1. Learn the rules
  2. Become an FAA-Certified Drone Pilot by passing the Knowledge Test
  3. Register your drone with the FAA

Who qualifies?

To fly under part 107 you must be:

  • At least 16 years old
  • Able to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • In a physical and mental condition to safely fly a UAS

To qualify for the grant you must:

  • Be a current Virginia Tech undergraduate student
  • Email us proof of exam registration and the completed form below at least 2 weeks before your exam date

What should I do?

  1. Begin studying for the Part 107 exam
  2. When you’re ready, schedule the test on the FAA website.
  3. Email us your application at 
  4. Pass the exam
  5. Email proof of a passing grade, proof of payment, and the reimbursement request form to the Virginia Tech Drone Park (
  6. Get paid! You can expect reimbursement within – weeks of submitting the required forms.
